The Social Action Committee at Adat Shalom is dedicated to embodying the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam, or “repairing the world,” through a diverse array of hands-on initiatives.
Our mission is twofold: to provide meaningful assistance to those in need within our community and to raise awareness among our congregation about pressing social issues and our collective responsibility.
Feeding the Homeless is an important annual project, when we assist Lighthouse- South Oakland Shelter with providing meals at their current location. This residence provides families a more stable environment without having to move every week to a different place.
Beyond this, our committee actively participates in several other impactful activities:
- Yad Ezra Kol Nidre Food Drive: Adat Shalom is a leader in the largest food collection of the year for Detroit’s only kosher food pantry.
- Ronald McDonald House: We provide meals three times a year, serving the clients personally with a homemade meal.
- Mitzvah Crib: We collect baby items donated to Jewish Family Service’s Healthy Start
- Knitting Projects: Creating garments and blankets for those in need.
