Pesach Preparation Guidelines

Cosmetics and Toiletries

Most non food personal care products may be used on Pesach, including:

  • Soaps
  • Shampoos
  • Creams and lotions
  • Makeup
  • Nail polish
  • Deodorant sticks

These may be used regardless of ingredients.

Avoid:

  • Liquid perfumes or colognes containing alcohol derived from grain
  • Hairspray or shaving lotions containing grain alcohol
  • Deodorants with grain alcohol
  • Lipstick that contains chametz

Kitchen and Kashering Basics

Kashering depends on how an item is used. The principle is ke voleo kakh poleto, meaning the way something absorbs is the way it releases.

Sinks

Metal sinks
Clean thoroughly, leave unused for 24 hours, then pour boiling water over all surfaces.

Porcelain sinks
Clean thoroughly and use a sink rack. When soaking dishes, use a separate basin.

Utensils

Cooking utensils
Kasher by immersion in boiling water.

Broiling or grilling utensils
Kasher by direct heat until the metal glows.

Utensils used only with cold foods
Thoroughly rinse and clean.

Items that cannot be kashered:

  • Earthenware
  • Ceramic
  • Teflon coated metal baking pans

Glassware (Including Pyrex)

Glassware may be prepared in one of two ways:

Option 1
Soak for three days, changing the water daily.

Option 2
Run through a clean dishwasher with no other items.

Surfaces and Storage

Tables, counters, and cabinets that normally come into contact with chametz should be cleaned thoroughly and covered with a durable covering.

Chametz and non Pesach utensils that have been sold should be separated, covered, or clearly marked to prevent accidental use during Pesach.
