From Évian to The Dominican Republic: From Historical Discovery to Global Educational Action

Hugh’s research about the 1938 Évian Conference led him to the Dominican
Republic, the only nation to offer a haven to Jewish refugees following the
conference. His work has evolved into the creation of the International
Student Educational Leadership Forum in Évian France.
Hugh’s engaging presentation combines historical facts, photographs, personal
experiences, and stories from nearly a decade of work preserving this
remarkable chapter of Jewish history through the creation of Sosua75 in the
Dominican Republic.

The program, presented in memory of Baver’s parents, longtime Adat Shalom
members Howard and Ruth Baver, will explore remembrance, moral courage and how
individual curiosity can lead to meaningful educational change.
